During daylight hours, a modern 4K turret camera operates at approximately 4.5W to 5.0W. However, when the light sensor activates supplemental warm white LEDs or EXIR infrared lamps at dusk, the power draw spikes to 9.5W – 12.5W. If a 64W switch is loaded with 6 or 7 cameras, it instantly trips its internal thermal fuse or resets its ports, dropping footage exactly when security is needed most.
In Northern England winter temperatures (-5°C to +2°C), internal camera heaters and motor seals stiffen. When motorized varifocal lenses focus or PTZ cameras execute patrol cycles, inrush current draws up to 30W on startup. We strictly engineer a minimum 20% to 25% continuous headroom on all switch installations to prevent winter voltage droop.
Cheap unbranded Ethernet cable made from copper-clad aluminium has up to 55% higher electrical loop resistance than solid bare copper (CW1308 / Cat6 pure copper). On long 40m to 70m cable runs, the cable itself dissipates 3W to 5W of energy as heat before power ever reaches the camera RJ45 socket, causing low-voltage freeze-ups.
